A New Zealand meat processor has been forced to close after running into financial difficulties.

Goulds Fine Foods in Petone ceased operations yesterday (11 July) and is in the process of appointing an administrator. Fifty-five people will lose their jobs as a result of the closure.

The Engineering Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU), which represented employees at the plant, said the company had been in trouble for a few years, but that management had hoped it could trade its way out of its difficulties.

“Unfortunately that hasn’t happened and the workers have paid the price,” said EPMU organiser Kim Ellis.
