The Association of Brazilian Beef Export Industries (ABIEC) said its believes the "sanitary status guarantees" offered by the industry are key to its success, and it will look to reinforce these concepts as part of its promotion of Brazilian beef overseas.

Other factors it identified for success included increasing competitiveness, efficiency in cattle production and the high quality of its final products.

The South American country has seen a 288% increase in beef exports over the past 10 years, according to ABIEC.

Antônio Jorge Camardelli, president of ABIEC, said: "The national beef exporting industry was build on very solid principles which will enable the country to reach a new record for beef exports in 2014, near the US$8bn mark.

"We had major achievements last year, such as the evolution of the Brazilian sanitary status and the increase in share of the main markets. That can help us better negotiate the inclusion of our product in the list of new potential buyers."

Brazil recorded a 13.9% increase in exports in 2013, to reach US$6.6bn.

Fernando Sampaio, executive director of the association, added: "In addition to this significant result we also had other important launches, such as the electronic seal, which is a technology that can reduce the amount of time on bureaucratic processes in cargo authorisation in our country."

The association said it expected a very active year in terms of sustainability, which has become an increasingly important factor in Brazilian agribusiness.

"We have an important agenda being developed this year, which includes partnerships with Federal Government and Public Ministry to maximise competitiveness and support to livestock producers," said Sampaio.

At the recent Sial food exhibition in Paris, ABIEC featured a Tunnel of Sustainability on its stand, where visitors could learn about the techniques being used to produce beef in Brazil, with sustainable features highlighted.

Also at the show, ABIEC and Apex-Brazil – an agency which promotions exports and investments – renewed the covenant of their joint project BrazilianBeef.
