The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) have outlined new procedures to strengthen biosecurity in the beef sector, following a two-year consultation with producers, industry associations, academics and provincial governments.

CCA president Martin Unrau said. “On-farm biosecurity is one of the front lines of prevention for managing the risk of animal diseases for cattle producers. This standard will provide the industry with a valuable tool to reduce the risk of disease entering cattle operations.”

Although many of the proposals are already widely practised, the programme introduces a national standard applicable for farms of all sizes, which will help beef sector measure standards.
