A Canadian meat processing plant has returned to operations after a fire ripped through its packaging area.

The fire was detected at the Maple Leaf Food’s Lagimodiere facility in Winnipeg on 10 August, and officials believe it started on the roof when hot roofing materials ignited. All staff were evacuated and there were no injuries, with damage largely contained to the electrical system.

The company said some areas of the plant, which produces cooked hams, back bacon, sausages and value-added ham products, have resumed production, while others will require repairs that could take several weeks. However, there was no damage to the extension being built to expand the plant’s bacon processing capabilities.
