With rising prices and complex supply chains putting the meat industry at increasing risk of food fraud, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria spreading in livestock populations, meat processors and packers are having to work harder than ever to ensure their food is safe.
On the whole, the industry is doing a fantastic job, but sometimes things do go wrong. Last year we saw growing international food fraud - and everything from horses and donkeys to rats and foxes found in meat products around the world. There were also a number of bacteria-related outbreaks and recalls, raising concerns over the levels of foodborne pathogens in meat.
