In the latest food fraud scandal to hit China, authorities have seized a batch of ‘fake’ beef after it was found to be chemically-treated pork.

According to local press reports, police in Xi’an have seized over 20,000kg of the meat and closed down six factories. It is understood that the pork was treated with additives including paraffin wax and chemical salts to change its colour so it resembled beef, before being being sold to unsuspecting traders and local markets.

Reports suggested the fraud had raised particular concern because Xi’an has a large Muslim population.
