The halal meat market is growing rapidly the world over and demand is increasing on a daily basis, said HRC chief executive Zubair Mughal, adding: “Pakistan ranked 18th in the production of halal meat and its volume is only 2.9% of the global market, which is very low.”
According to Mughal, Pakistan needs to do more and can play an important role in the growing market as it has more than 160m livestock – 71m cattle and buffalo and 89m sheep and goats. However, Pakistan has followed an export trend within the halal export market and Mughal pointed out that there are no Muslim countries in the top 10 list of halal meat exporters. “Pakistan, Sudan and other Muslim countries have a big potential to export halal meat globally.”
To strengthen the global halal meat industry, HRC will organise an international workshop on halal meat, which is to take place on 26 August this year in Dubai. Leading professor and halal expert Javaid Awan, of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, will be speaking.
Other internationally renowned speakers will also highlight the importance of halal meat and the fundamentals of halal certification, animal welfare and stunning. The impact of halal slaughtering and the effect it has on meat quality – caused by pre- and post slaughtering procedures – will also be covered.
Attendees will also develop strategies in a bid to increase the share of halal meat on the global meat market; they will discuss livestock management for halal meat and slaughterhouse automation, looking at machinery, tools and training.
However, the main aim of the workshop is to promote the trade and the importance of halal meat internationally.
