The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Deparment announced the ban yesterday (19 February) following a notification from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) about the outbreak in the north-eastern German states.
A CFS spokesman said the ban followed a previous ban on poultry from the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, which was put in place in December last year following an outbreak of avian influenza H5.
“We have contacted the German authorities over the issue and will closely monitor information issued by the OIE on the avian influenza outbreaks in Germany. Appropriate action will be taken in response to the development of the situation,” said the spokesman.
