Indonesian officials have seized a horde of poultry products illegally imported from Malaysia.

The products were confiscated following a co-ordinated raid by the Indonesian police, the animal husbandry agency of West Kalimantan province and the quarantine agency in Entikong. They include 890kg of chicken gizzards and liver, 154kg of duck meat, 464kg of chicken wings, 350kg of whole chicken carcases and 2,880 pieces of chicken sausage.

The illegal products were smuggled out of the region of Sarawak through Entikong, Malaysia and the Indonesian border in West Kalimantan, and then stored in a warehouse with a capacity of 40 tonnes of frozen products in Balaikarangan, West Kalimantan.

An officer from the animal husbandry agency said a significant quantity of poultry had been smuggled into the West Kalimantan province from Malaysia over the past three years, including chicken meat and sausages, as well as eggs. “In 2010, even live broilers were smuggled,” they said.

Cases of poultry product smuggling have also been reported in Batam island, in the province of Riau archipelago.

Speaking in Bogor recently, the chairman of National Chicken Farmer Organizations Association (Gopan), Tri Hardiyanto, said that an investigation had found illegal product,s including frozen whole chicken carcases and chicken leg quarters. They products are thought to have come from neighbouring countries Malaysia and Singapore, with smugglers removing product labels and storing the goods in warehouses in Batam,

Hardiyanto warned that illegal poultry products are being sold cheaply in Batam, making local manufacturers less competitive. He added that he hoped the police and agricultural quarantine agency would be more active in preventing smuggling of poultry products into border areas in the future.
