Meat takes centre stage in Cologne

The Anuga trade show takes place next month and GlobalMeatNews will be in attendance. We take a look at who is attending and why you should as well. 

The meat industry has been undergoing some changes globally. Companies have been consolidating and merging to become stronger, while more savvy consumers have meant that food safety on the production lines is paramount.

It’s also a sector poised for growth. In the past 50 years, global meat production has quadrupled. The OECD and FAO are expecting world meat production to increase from 297 million tonnes (mt) in 2011 up to 350mt by the year 2021, the sector is thriving. 

The increase in poultry meat (+2.2%) is expected to rise more significantly than for beef (+1.8%) and pork (+1.4%). As such, the poultry share of world meat production will increase up to 37%. Pork will also account for 37% of the market share by 2021.

Meat production has also developed positively throughout Europe and, according to estimates from the EU Commission, is expected to grow further in 2015 and 2016. In 2015, the EU is expecting meat production of 45.1mt of meat in total, 1.3% more than in 2014.

With all the changes taking place and optimism in the marketplace, it is important to stay on top of everything going on in the meat sector. And one of the best places to do that is at Anuga. Taking place on 10-14 October in Cologne, it is the biggest trade show of its kind and this year’s theme, Taste the Future, will enable attendees to gain an insight to the future of the global food industry, including emerging flavour trends, packaging formats and new convenience concepts.

This year’s meat area will cover the sector’s trends that are set to shape 2015, especially in the area of convenience. Regionalism and traceability among products will also be examined, as will issues of animal welfare and protection.

Exhibiting companies include 2 Sisters Storteboom, ABP Group, AJC International, Amadori, Bell, Beretta, Borg Meier, Campofrio, Citterio, Danish Crown, Inalca, JBS, LDC, MHP, Nippon Ham Foods, Plukon Poultry, Rügenwalder Mill, Smithfield, Tönnies, Tyson Foods, Vion, Westfleisch, Wiesenhof and Wiltmann.

There will also be large community investments from Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Austria, Spain, South Africa, Turkey and the US.

For the adventurous meat-eaters, there are several exhibitors who will tickle the taste buds. For example, Samex Australian Meat Company will be displaying its camel meat offering and, to help take advantage of the growing game market, Ager has launched the Trio of Game pack and will be showcasing it at Anuga. Aimed at the restaurant business, it includes a deer medallion, wild boar steak and venison escalope, which are frozen, vacuum-packed and come in four packs of each with four servings.
