Newcastle disease spread in Eastern Europe

By Julia Green , 30-Jan-2013

Bulgarian authorities have reported more than 350 cases of Newcastle disease in flocks of backyard poultry.

According to the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE), all sick birds have died. The outbreak follows a report from the OIE earlier this month on the Czech Republic, where backyard pigeons were killed by Newcastle disease.

The OIE says that, so far, the outbreak has been limited to Kardzhali in southern Bulgaria, and measures to control local poultry movements inside the country have been taken. Other control measures, including quarantine, vaccination and screening have also been applied. “The source of the disease has yet to be determined,” said the OIE.
