EU member states have backed a European Commission move to close private storage aid for pigmeat.

The measure was first introduced in March to help EU producers deal with low prices across six categories of pigmeat products caused by the Russian trade embargo.

The EU Commission believes private storage aid for pigmeat is no longer needed, given that EU pigmeat market prices have stabilised and the uptake by operators has dropped to "modest volumes". The proposal to close the scheme was then voted on by member states in the CMO Committee.

In the seven weeks since the measure was introduced, 65,000 tonnes of pigmeat was temporarily taken off the market (for three to five months) across 18 different member states. Denmark, Spain and Germany saw the greatest uptake in using the storage aid option, with smaller volumes recorded in Poland, Italy, the Netherlands, France and Belgium.

Boneless leg cuts accounted for 63% of pigmeat stored, with boned belly cuts making up 17% of the rest.
