Sir Roger Moore hits back at Fortnum & Mason
The announcement came a few days after PETA campaigners and celebrities such as former James Bond actor Sir Roger Moore expressed dismay against the retailer’s decision to sell foie gras in the new outlet.
Commenting on their decision to scrap plans of selling the product, Moore said: “Fortnum & Mason’s decision not to sell foie gras in Dubai represents a significant step in getting this ‘torture in a tin’ out of all its stores. The company is tacitly acknowledging that this vile victual has no place in its future plans, and the next logical step would be for Fortnum to make this a company wide policy.”
Last week, the Bond star called on consumers to stay away from the store until foie gras was discontinued and called the method in which it was produced as “cruel”.
Moore issued a separate statement through People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in which he urged people to not believe the company’s claim of being quintessentially English, as foie gras is illegal to produce in the UK.
He said: “The great and the good in England – including the Houses of Parliament, Wimbledon, Lord’s Cricket Ground, the BAFTA Awards and His Royal Highness Prince Charles – all refuse to serve this ‘torture in a tin’.”
Moore is joined by Dame Vera Lynn, Twiggy, Ricky Gervais, Joanna Lumley and Kate Winslet who all support the PETA campaign against foie gras.
