Meat processor Green Bay Dressed Beef, operating as American Foods Group, has issued a recall on 7,420 pounds (3.7 tonnes) of beef brains.

The Washington-based business was forced to issue the recall over fears the products could be contaminated with specified risk materials (SRM).

SRM is a term for tissues of animals that cannot be inspected and passed on to humans, as safety officials fear bovine spongiform encephalopathy-causing bacteria is concentrated in the tissues.

The frozen meat products from Green Bay Dressed Beef were produced between 24 April and 11 August 2016. All items were shipped to a distributor in California, the identity of which has not been verified by this site.

The health risk for the recall was been set at ‘high’, despite no confirmed reports of illness linked to consumption of the beef brains being reported, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said on 24 August.

Green Bay Dressed Beef could not be not reached for comment.

The recalled product:

15-unit cases containing beef brains labelled: “AMERICAN FOODS GROUP BEEF BRAINS <30”. Packaging code:  06400.
