Meat processors in Japan have reported increased slaughter figures. According to Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), Japanese beef plants processed over 107,000 cattle in July 2003.

This comes despite a telling drop in speciality breed processing.

While this was one per cent higher than the slaughter in July 2001, it was four per cent less than the July 2002 beef slaughter, the MLA said.

Slaughter levels of high value Wagyu cattle remained low, with only 42,600 slaughtered during July. This represents an 11 per cent drop from July 2001.

Slaughter figures for Wagyu cattle were down by 17 per cent for the year to July.

However, slaughter rates for dairy cattle have increased, up 13 per cent compared with July 2001. Dairy cow slaughterings were up by seven per cent for the year.
