The issue of food labelling rises up once again with the recent news from the UK that a Private Member's Bill on Food Labelling is due to be considered by the UK House of Commons on 7 March 2003.
According to Jagdeep Tiwana from the law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner, the bill - referred to as the 'Honesty in Food Labelling Bill' - contains a number of provisions aimed at providing consumers with more information about the food they purchase.
If enacted, the 'Food Labelling Act 2003' would introduce requirements that the country of origin will need to be marked on all food sold to consumers and, if food originates from a country where production standards are lower than those in England and Wales, this fact must appear on the food label.
Tiwana continues that as most food law in the UK is now derived from the EU, it is unlikely that the Bill will receive sufficient support to become law.
