Packaged foods company Conagra Brands has recalled over 50 tonnes of chicken nugget ready meals after a supplier said one ingredient may contain Salmonella.

More than 110,000 pounds (lb) of Conagra’s frozen chicken nugget meals have been recalled, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said on 20 April. This came after a supplier told Conagra one ingredient used in the chocolate brownie mix, included in the ready meal, might be contaminated with Salmonella.

The recall comes hot on the heels of another Conagra food safety scare. Less than three weeks ago on 3 April, the US-based packaged foods company issued a recall for its Hunt’s Chili Kits, again due to the potential presence of salmonella. Conagra only became aware of the problem after a supplier told the company a seasoning kit that comes with the food may have Salmonella contamination. At this stage, however, there is no evidence that the same supplier is behind both Salmonella recalls.

Products affected by the latest recall of 110,817lb of frozen chicken nugget meals were sent to retail stores across the US. In addition to chicken nuggets, the frozen meals affected include macaroni and cheese and a chocolate brownie. The ready meals were produced on 26 January 2017.

No reports of illness

There have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to consumption of the recalled ready meals that may contain traces of Salmonella.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps. Most people do not require treatment, but in some cases it can require hospital treatment. Infants, pregnant women, the elderly or people with a weakened immune system are more likely to experience severe symptoms.

Chicago-based Conagra agreed to acquire trendy meat snacks and sunflower seeds producer Thanasi Foods for an undisclosed sum in March .

In its third-quarter results, also posted in March, Conagra reported a 9.9% drop in net sales, compared to the same period a year ago.
