The company at the centre of the US “pink slime” scandal has filed a lawsuit against ABC news for alleged defamation.

Beef Products Inc said that ABC News made a “conscious decision to conduct a month long misinformation campaign”, alleging that the broadcaster made 200 false and defamatory statements in 24 broadcast and online stories in its coverage of the controversy in March.

It has asked for $1.2 billion in actual and statutory damages, claiming that its sales declined by 80% as a result of the coverage, with losses of $400 million.

ABC News has vowed to contest the case “vigorously”.
