A global meat processing company, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary in China, is on its way to becoming one of the country’s biggest poultry processors.

OSI China, which supplies major fast food chains, including Starbucks, Saizeriya, Papa John’s, Yum, Burger King and Subway, opened a "mega-plant" for further processing in China’s Henan province last month (11 September), and signed a deal with DOYOO Group to create OSI’s third fully vertically integrated poultry operation in the country.

“We now have a total of eight factories in China, and we are on the path to be one of the country’s largest poultry producers,” said Sheldon Lavin, chairman and CEO of OSI. “To continue to capture the incredible opportunities in front of us, we are expanding our vertically integrated model here for poultry, in both primary and further processing.”

OSI China opened its first factory in Beijing in 1992, supplying the country’s McDonald’s. The company now has eight factories in the country, and is a major supplier to a number of other fast-food chains.

The company supplied 113 tons of beef, chicken, pork, eggs and onions to McDonald’s during the Beijing Olympic Games.

Speaking at a 20th anniversary ceremony, OSI executive vice-president and CFO Bill Weimer said: “China has made great achievements in the last two decades. We are honoured to witness the progress China has made. As an entrepreneurial company, OSI China has long-term commitment and confidence in the Chinese market. We are hoping to grow together with China’s economy.

“Our commitment in China is also reflected in social responsibility, supply chain or economic responsibility and environmental responsibility. OSI China will continue to provide for a quality lifestyle with safe and quality food.”

OSI is a global supplier of meat to foodservice brands, with a presence in 17 countries around the world and a head office in Illinois, US.
