A US company has recalled beef tongue products over fears that the animal’s tonsils were not completely removed.

The recall applies to various sizes of Black Earth Meats Natural Beef Tongues and Black Earth Meats Local Beef Tongues produced on 8, 11, 17 and 18 October 2012.

Tonsils are considered a specified risk material (SRM) for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). However, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said that there was “no indication that any of the cattle slaughtered displayed any signs of BSE.”
