The president of McDonald’s USA is to step down next month after 35 years of working for the burger giant.

Jan Fields, who began her career behind the counter, will be replaced by Jeff Stratton, currently global chief restaurant officer, from 1 December.

Commenting on her time at the company, Fields said: “When I started on fries as a crew member, I had no idea where that job would lead. McDonald’s has shaped me as much as I’d like to believe I had a role in shaping it.”

Fields has been credited with helping McDonald’s USA make “significant nutrition advancements”, such as introducing apple slices into the Happy Meals and creating smaller portions of French fries for children, as well as driving the voluntary adoption of nutrition labelling on menu boards.

McDonald’s president and chief executive officer Don Thompson said: “We appreciate and salute Jan for more than three decades of inspired leadership and impactful service under the Arches. All of us who know Jan will miss her genuine nature and quick-witted humor. We wish her the very best.”

Stratton also started out working as a McDonald’s crew member and has clocked up 40 years’ experience with the company, working his way up to chief restaurant officer for McDonald’s USA before joining the global team in 2005. He currently oversees 34,000 McDonald’s restaurants globally and will be managed by McDonald’s chief operating officer Tim Fenton in his new role.

“Jeff’s roots in restaurant operations, his strong leadership and his innovative actions driving our Plan to Win framework make him the right choice to lead the US business,” said Fenton. “Don and I are confident in Jeff’s deep experience and his dedication to finding solutions that are right for our customers and shareholders.”

Stratton added: “I’m honoured to assume this leadership role and will remain focused on growing our business and elevating our brand. The great people of this company and our loyal customers fuel my strong passion for McDonald’s.”
