Three European campaigning organisations have written to the Irish Presidency of the Council of Europe and the EU27 ambassadors calling for consumer, animal welfare and environmental issues to be considered during the the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations with the United States.

In the letter, Eurogroup for Animals, together with the European Consumer Organisation and Friend of the Earth Europe said the EU standards of animal welfare, consumer and environmental protection should be upheld, with European citizens’ rights and democratic decisions maintained throughout the negotiation process.

The letter was sent ahead of today’s (14 June) meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, which is due to approve the European Commission’s mandate to enter TTIP negotitations with the US.
