In pictures: The Six-Second Project in South Africa

The Six-Second Project is working with its partner organisation, INMED Partnerships for Children, to introduce sustainable agriculture techniques to a farmer co-operative in Mubvumoni Village in the Venda region of South Africa, near the Zimbabwe border.

The project is transforming the farm, which is operated by the disabled subsistence farmers of the Thabelo Christian Association for the Disabled. Some are crippled by polio, some are missing limbs, and some suffer pain conditions. In addition to their disabilities, they do not have sufficient resources or farming knowledge to regularly feed their families, and malnutrition among their children is widespread.

Thanks to the IMS donation, and investment from other donors, the co-op is receiving both capital investments, as well as operations and business training, to develop the agricultural production capabilities necessary to feed their families and generate sustainable income. Specifically, the donation from the IMS was invested in the following ways:

•    A shade cloth to cover hydroponically-produced crops. This allows for year-round production.
•    Building materials for a hen house, and 25 egg-laying pullets. The eggs are providing immediate and valuable animal protein for the families and their children, while excess eggs are being sold to nearby markets, with the proceeds invested into inputs such as seeds for planting.
•    Water storage tanks and building materials to construct a water-harvesting system. This is a community ravaged by both floods and drought, so water harvesting will help stabilise production.

To round out the project, SABMiller, the international brewing company, invested in the construction of the commercial-sized aquaponic system shown in the pictures.

Further meat industry involvement is encouraged, as future donations are still needed to help complete the transformation of this farming community. The remaining needs include a roof for the water-catchment building, tractor rental to till additional land for planting, a drip irrigation system, goats for the introduction of goat milk production, and funds to provide ongoing business training to ensure the long-term sustainability of this project.

The Six-Second Project is challenging the global meat industry to engage in projects to fight child hunger and malnutrition by donating and helping to fundraise through cause marketing campaigns linked to meat products. Funds raised/donated are invested in sustainable crop and livestock solutions that allow families to feed their children and generate sustainable income.
