A Rabobank report in March predicted a significant shortfall in the North American hog market, following the impact of the porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDv). It said the virus had already effected around 60% of the US breeding herd, and had also spread to Mexico. Overall US pork production was anticipated to decline by 6-7% – the highest drop in more than 30 years. In response to the outbreak, the US’ National Pork Board launched a three-pronged strategy to try and stem the spread of the virus.
