Leading US beef processor Golden State Foods (GSF) is to invest between $40-45m in a new meat processing facility in Opelika, Alabama, as it looks to expand its operations.

The announcement was made this week via a video conference involving local mayor Gary Fuller, secretary of commerce Greg Canfield and Alabama speaker of the house Mike Hubbard, alongside GSF company officials.

The new state-of-the-art facility will be built in the Northeast Opelika Industrial Park, and is due to open in autumn 2016.

A spokesperson for GSF said the business considered many locations in the south east, but the Opelika site "best fit our strategic needs".

Wayne Morgan, corporate vice-president, President Meat Group, GSF, added: "After careful consideration, we selected Opelika as the site for our new facility, based on the strategic location along I-85, the available workforce and the atmosphere of industry and government cooperation."

Approximately 173 new jobs will be created at the new plant.

GSF, headquartered in Irvine, California, currently supplies more than 125,000 quick service restaurants from its 45 locations across five continents.
