UK-based Cogent Breeding, which supplies beef and dairy genetics to more than 40 countries worldwide, has acquired Foundation Genetics, the specialist Canadian bovine genetics business.

Cogent said the acquisition was the latest in an international growth programme which is focused on making the company the world leader in the improvement of beef and milk genetics. From its base in Cheshire, Cogent has a breeding programme with the UK’s largest bull stud. It supplies bull semen in both the UK and internationally.

The addition of Canada’s Foundation Genetics will strengthen Cogent’s international operations and provide the UK business with a strong base and route to market in new territories as well as allowing expansion and investment in one of the world’s most important domestic markets,” said Cogent chief executive Andrew Turner.

'International growth strategy'

Foundation Genetics is complementary to our existing business and integral to our international growth strategy,” said Turner. “The acquisition provides us with a strong platform to benefit our international customers with the superior genetic quality of Canada’s herd and an expanded portfolio of exceptional beef and dairy genetics, animal health products and value-added services.”

We’re excited to have the talented team at Foundation Genetics join us and look forward to working with them. Our combined expertise, resources and capabilities mean we’re in a strong position to serve the domestic Canadian market and achieve our international ambitions.”

Following the completion of the acquisition, the management team, sales and operational staff at Foundation Genetics will trade under the Cogent name. Dave Brand will remain as general manager of the acquired business in Canada reporting to Stuart Boothman, Cogent’s international operations manager.
