The first international symposium on cultured meat is taking place between 18-20 October in the Netherlands.

Delegates attending the MECC Convention Centre in Maastricht will discuss whether meat produced synthetically in a lab, rather than taken from animals, is a genuine possibility in the search for sustainable solutions to food production.

At the gathering, six keynote speakers, including Dr Mark Post who has organised the symposium, will discuss the development of cultured meat and other protein alternatives.

Post made headlines in August 2013, when he presented the first cultured meat hamburger to the world.

During the three days of the symposium, researchers and scientists will have the opportunity to get together, share knowledge and ideas, and enter into new collaborative efforts. “We strive to create an inspiring but also critical atmosphere discussing tissue engineering for food, in particular cultured meat,” said Post.
