The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed that farmer Howard Buffet, son of the billionaire investor Warren Buffet, will speak at its Agriculture Outlook panel in February.

Every year since 1923, the USDA has hosted an annual meeting with the agriculture industry to facilitate conversation on key issues and topics affecting the industry on a national, international, macro and micro level.

This week the USDA published its keynote speakers and panellists for its Agricultural Outlook Forum Panel on ‘Providing Leadership for Present and Future Generations in the Transformation of Agriculture’.

USDA secretary Tom Vilsack and his deputy Krysta Harden will give opening remarks, with Howard Buffet and former governor of Indiana Mitch Daniels also making speeches.

Industry-leading guests

The panellists, who come from an array of professions including academia, business and farming, are: Elizabeth Garrett, president of Cornell University; Ilene Gordon, CEO of Ingredion; Pamela Hess, executive director of the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture; and Pam Johnson, an Iowa farmer and ex-president of the National Corn Growers Association.

The two-day event attracts more than 1,600 people. Among the attendees are meat producers, processors, policy-makers, government officials and non-governmental organisations from around the world. It will be held on 25-26 February, at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel in Arlington, Virginia.

Topics likely to be discussed include biosecurity, land and tenure transition, the rise of organic, risk management and scientific advancements in agriculture.

There will also be a women-only networking event for farmers and agriculture workers.
