US equipment manufacturer Butler Automatic has launched a plastic film splicer, which the company claims can 'drastically' increase throughput.

SP1 Series Automatic Film Splicer is the latest machine from Butler and it is a new launch that could reduce downtime for food and beverage packaging companies.

Massachusetts-based Butler said the automatic film splicer would increase packaging efficiency by reducing manual film roll changes that could lead to production downtime.

Mike Mucci, vice-president of engineering at Butler Automatic, said the SP1 Automatic Film Splicer would make “an excellent investment” for food and drink packaging operations because it “drastically increases production uptime”. Customers could expect to enjoy a “complete return on their investment” in the machine within a few months, he added.

Mighty machine

Butler promises the SP1 can offer users long-term, trouble-free packaging performance. It works by sensing the diameter of the depleting roll of film and automatically splices – or connects – the expiring roll onto the new one. SP1 can run at speeds of up to 600ft per minute.

Alongside the automatic SP1 slicer, Butler has also launched the SP1 RB – a similar piece of equipment designed for full wash-down capabilities. The stainless steel machine complies with most factory regulation.

Butler describes itself as the global leader in automatic splicing solutions and claims to be the world’s largest manufacturer of automated web-spliced equipment for the food industry.
