A mobile app, designed to help shoppers buy and prepare meat and poultry products, has been launched by the North American Meat Institute (NAMI).

NAMI claims to have launched the “first-of-its-kind” mobile app for iPhones and Android devices aimed at helping clueless consumers make informed decisions when buying meat and poultry.

The free MyMeatUp mobile app provides a full guide to beef, pork, lamb and veal retail meat cuts. It also has a useful glossary of common terms, such as grass-fed, antibiotic-free and no hormones added, many of which are applicable to poultry products.
This dynamic, interactive app offers consumers a convenient, go-to guide that will equip shoppers with essential tips when buying, preparing and cooking meat and poultry products,” said NAMI president and CEO Barry Carpenter.

‘Great’ for Generation Y

It is a great resource, particularly for younger shoppers just starting to navigate the grocery store on their own, for themselves and their families, to answer any questions they have about the meat in the case.”

In its release promoting the app, NAMI said millennial shoppers – the generation born between 1982 and 2004 – had expressed “uncertainty” about how to select and prepare a number of meat products.

On the app’s homepage, users are offered four options: beef, pork veal or lamb. Tapping on one of these directs them to a breakdown of popular cuts of the meat sold at retail. Each of these has an illustration showing where on the animal the cut came from, and provides useful recipe ideas and cooking methods.

The app also has food safety and preparation tips, along with a video guide explaining how to use a meat thermometer.

MyMeatUp has already started to get a positive response, with one Twitter commentator stating the app was “very handy”.

Users can download the app from registered app stores.
