Oscar Mayer meat plant closure date confirmed
Bacon, hot dog and cold cut producer Oscar Mayer will close down by the end of March 2017, according to a spokesman from parent company Kraft Heinz.
“Kraft Heinz is slated to end production at the Madison factory in the first quarter of 2017, and we are in the process of transitioning production to other facilities within the US,” Kraft Heinz company representative Michael Mullen told this site.
“As of today, there are approximately 400 employees remaining in Madison.”
The business has produced processed meats for decades and can trace its roots back to 1880s Chicago. But the end is truly in sight for the meat company's Madison plant, which, at its height, employed more than 4,000 staff.
US-based Kraft Heinz announced in November 2015 that it would move Oscar Mayer’s HQ from Madison, Wisconsin, to Chicago. This was part of a wider restructuring move announced by Kraft in 2015, which has seen the business slash more than 2,500 jobs across its US subsidiaries.
