Pressure from all angles to cut meat consumption for health or environmental reasons had the single biggest impact on the industry last year, according to an exclusive GlobalMeatNews survey.

The State of the Industry: Global Meat 2017 report highlights the mood across the international animal protein sector, based on the views gleaned from top meat industry professionals.

It is a report of two strands. First, there is an assessment of key markets, based on import and export data, provided exclusively by World Trade Stats, plus comment from top government and market analysts. Second, it features a comprehensive survey of the opinions from leading industry stakeholders on the crucial issues they face.

Pressure to reduce meat consumption had the biggest impact on the industry in 2016, with 24% of respondents claiming this hit business the hardest. By contrast, China’s growing demand for imported meat, especially pork, had the second-largest impact.

The issues reflect both the pressure and opportunities the meat industry will have to grapple with as it moves forwards in an age when things have never looked so uncertain.

But what about some of the other pressing issues of the age, such as investment, jobs, antibiotics, trade, training, takeovers and environmental management? This report reveals whether the industry plans to hire more staff, continue to consolidate or change its environmental stewardship.
