The company from Boston recalled 840 lb of a breaded white fish known as swai on Friday 16 June due to fears the product’s coating may contain undeclared milk, an allergen not declared on product labelling.
Anthony Randezza, director of frozen seafood sales at Channel Fish Processing (CPF) told this site Newly Weds Foods supplied the breadcrumb products that might contain small traces of milk. He added the business was not thinking of ditching Newly Weds Foods because of the problem.
CFP’s recall means 12 US food processors have now collectively recalled nearly 4 million lb of produce in less than a fortnight. The recalls have been driven by the potential presence of milk in breadcrumb and cracker products used to coat meat and fish.
No reports of illness
Big businesses including Tyson Foods and Conagra Brands are among the firms forced to recall breaded meat products due to the potential presence of milk.
Newly Weds Foods has confirmed it is involved in the massive tranche of recalls that has hit businesses in the US states of Arizona, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
The US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said “a supplier” was responsible for the recalls. However, at this stage it is still unclear if Newly Weds Foods was the only supplier.
There have been no confirmed reports of illness or adverse reactions due to consumption of the coated meat, poultry and fish products. Consumers who have purchased them have been urged not to consume them. Instead, they should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
