US plant-based business Beyond Meat has completed a one-year review process to secure non-GMO verification across all of its lines.

As part of its review process, Beyond Meat had to pass The Non-GMO Project’s Product Verification Program – the US’ only third-party verification for non-GMO food and products – which included examinations of product ingredients, supply chain and manufacturing facilities.

Beyond Meat’s favourite products, such as the Beyond Burger and Beyond Sausage, will receive a butterfly seal across their packaging, symbolising that they are non-GMO Project Verified.

The move cements Beyond Meat’s commitment to selling products using simple, plant-based ingredients, without GMOs, according to CEO Ethan Brown.

We believe the best way to serve the family is through a commitment to all-natural, non-GMO ingredients when building meat directly from plants,” said Brown. “Though these tough guardrails make it harder for our scientists, we feel it is the right long-run decision for Beyond Meat and our consumers.”

Beyond Meat’s portfolio of plant-based proteins are sold at more than 30,000 retail and foodservice outlets across the US. The products are also set to feature across 50 countries worldwide as part of its global expansion plans.

Non-GMO project associate director Courtney Pineau said the verification provided shoppers with a transparent choice in the marketplace.

The news comes just after Beyond Meat announced it was opening a 26,000sq ft research and development centre in Los Angeles, California. The expansive innovation campus, dubbed by Beyond Meat as ‘The Manhattan Beach Project’, is designed to bring the world’s best scientists, engineers, food technologists, chefs and managers to the business.
