Korean retailer Mega Mart has launched a beef traceability model through a collaboration with food producer NDS and global supply chain management business Ambrosus.

The model, which has been pioneered by Ambrosus, will allow company partners and consumers to access detailed information from their smartphone about the history and transportation surrounding each cut of beef sold at the retailer.

Ambrosus will be responsible for identifying and tracing all of Mega Mart’s beef using distributed ledger technology. The technology will also configure the data from each piece of meat into a consumer-oriented application.

Consumers will be able to scan a beef supply chain such as NDS subsidiary Nongshim to find out about the specific cow, the origin, the veterinarian health check of the meat and transportation conditions.

The move is designed to facilitate trust and maximise satisfaction among consumers, as well as improve Korean food standards through blockchain technology, according to NDS’ CEO Joong-Won Kim.

With the Ambrosus Network, NDS will be able to demonstrate the quality and origin of a variety of premium beef products in order to build consumer trust with much needed transparency,” said Won Kim.

Ambrosus’ CEO Angel Versetti said the traceability model would provide consumers with much needed information about the quality and origin of their beef products.

Cooperating with NDS for this Proof-of-Concept is mutually beneficial to both companies,” said Versetti. “Ambrosus is looking forward to building an end-to-end solution for Mega Mart’s beef supply chain, and to demonstrate the flexibility and efficiency of Ambrosus’ blockchain and IoT platform.”

Ambrosus launched its proof-of-concept model in July 2018 and set up another partnership with French flavouring company Premium Goods.
