US-based online start-up firm FoodMaven is set to expand its protein offering by buying Denver meat firm Anderson Boneless Beef.

Purchased for an undisclosed fee, the acquisition is part of FoodMaven’s growth plans for 2019 and is the company’s first acquisition since launching in 2015.

FoodMaven said Anderson’s business aligned with its model to distribute high-quality, natural food to restaurants and institutions, creating a true “farm to table” system.

Anderson distributes fresh beef products in Colorado, serving more than 400 customers across the foodservice, hospitality and grocery industries.

As part of the deal, FoodMaven will take on 35 of Anderson Boneless Beef’s staff immediately. The start-up firm also predicted it would gain more than 400 new customers by offering customised cuts of meat.

This is our first acquisition, and a big milestone for FoodMaven,” said FoodMaven’s CEO Patrick Bultema. “Not only will we grow our company size, but we’ll be able to process oversupplied proteins which is key for our mission of ensuring all food gets used with good purpose.”

Also commenting on the acquisition, Anderson Boneless Beef’s CEO Charlie Tan said joining FoodMaven gave the business the opportunity to be part of “something bigger”.

FoodMaven’s mission is so important, and we’re all excited to be part of it,” said Tan.

Tan will continue as a consultant to the business for three months to help steer the transition and will remain as an advisor thereafter.
