Avery Dennison co-launches ‘revolutionary’ blockchain beef initiative

Global labelling and functional materials manufacturer Avery Dennison has partnered with Beefchain and the Wyoming Business Council to help ranchers command greater value for beef by using blockchain technology.

As part of the partnership, Avery Dennison will help enhance Beefchain’s initiatives by enabling them to go beyond the radio frequency identification (RFID)-tagging of cattle, to RFID-tagging the resultant beef cases, which will be tracked and traced along the supply chain to consumption.

This means consumers, restaurants, distributors, and retailers can track their steak from farm to restaurant.

These beef cases will carry a digital identifier that will trace each individual case from farm to table and will be traced along the way at the point of plant processing, export, import and, finally, to delivery.

BeefChain’s mission is to create a new “rancher-centric​” supply chain utilising blockchain technology to recapture the value by third-party feedlots and processors.

The project is a first for the US and will help create a new “authenticity and traceability​” across the food industry, where bans on problematic food items add up to around US$90 billion-worth of losses each year for beef producers.

Avery Dennison’s vice president Francisco Melo said RFID was setting the foundations for blockchain integration in the food industry and would help to recover losses from beef producers.
