The World Steak Challenge is back for 2019 and on its way to Dublin.

Now open for entries, the world’s premier steak competition will take place on 9 and 10 July in Dublin, Ireland.

The two-day World Steak Challenge includes live cutting and cooking for the expert and consumer judging panels on 9 July, at judging host Fire Restaurant in the heart of Dublin. On 10 July, there will be a study tour of quality Irish food, arranged by official host partner Bord Bía before all the winners are unveiled at the Round Room in the Mansion House.

GlobalMeatNews​ deputy editor Aidan Fortune explained why the event was heading to Dublin.

“This is the fifth year of the World Steak Challenge and we wanted to make it bigger and better than ever. It was time to take the event on the road, and where better than the home of some of the finest food in the world. Each year, the World Steak Challenge grows and we expect this year’s event to be no different. We’re very excited to have Fire Restaurant as the event’s judging host and Bord Bía as the official host partner, and we think 2019 could prove to be the best World Steak Challenge yet.”

Debuting in 2015, the World Steak Challenge is the benchmark for quality steak. Judged by a panel of independent experts from across the globe and the supply chain, all steaks are assessed in terms of appearance raw and cooked, taste, aroma, succulence, marbling and consistency of fat trim. The entries given the highest scores will be awarded a Gold Medal and go through to the consumer panel. Both sets of scores are combined and the highest-ranking entry is crowned the World’s Best Steak.

There are also awards for World’s Best Grass-fed Steak, World’s Best Grain-fed Steak, World’s Best Sirloin, World’s Best Fillet and World’s Best Rib Eye. As well as Gold Medals, there are also Silver and Bronze Medals to be won.

Last year’s World Steak Challenge saw JN Meat International win the top prize​ with a sirloin steak from a grass-fed Ayrshire, produced in Finland. Judges awarded 45 Gold Medals, 37 Silver Medals and 54 Bronze Medals on a night which saw some of the world’s top producers battle it out to be crowned the World’s Best Steak.
