Interporc revealed that significant demand from non-EU countries boosted sales
Spanish meat organisation Interprofesional del Porcino de Capa Blanca (Interporc) has outlined the “extraordinary evolution” of the Spanish pig sector, as 2018 exports exceeded €4.8m for the first time.

The organisation revealed that significant demand from non-EU countries boosted sales, as volumes grew by 8% to 854,481 tonnes (t) and by 1.2% in value to €1.8m. Spanish pork exports to the European Union increased by just 0.6%, to more than 1.3 million t.

Interporc said that France continued to be its main destination for pork, followed by Portugal, Italy, Germany and the UK.

Additionally, Interporc director Alberto Herranz pointed out the significant growth for Spanish pork over the past five years as exports increased by 47% in volume and 36% in value during this time.

A large part of this international success is due to the implementation of the world's most demanding production model in terms of sustainability and animal welfare,” said Herranz.

Spain sells more and better pork products to the world, thanks to the commitment to quality and variety of our companies to tap consumer trends.”

At the end of February, Interporc revealed it would make Japan its “priority destination” for Spanish pork trade after the European Union and the Asian country agreed a trade deal.
