The new tests are designed to assist laboratories in assessing their ability to identify and quantify these substances.
Fapas launched the proficiency tests for estradiol and testosterone in bovine serum and synthetic hormones such as alpha-boldenone, nortestosterone and methyltestosterone in bovine urine.
The new tests expand the range of proficiency tests offered by Fapas, including those for veterinary medicines, which support the meat industry in protecting consumers from contaminants and potentially dangerous levels of other substances.
It explains that at natural levels in beef cattle, estradiol, testosterone, alpha-boldenone, oestradiol and nortestosterone do not pose a problem. However, these hormones may be artificially elevated in beef cattle by producers to promote growth and gain a market advantage. The gender of the animal is important in determining natural hormones, but detections in the wrong gender of animal, or unusually high levels in the right gender of animal can indicate misuse.
