Brazilian chicken exports rise despite coronavirus situation

Brazilian chicken meat exports grew 2.6% year-on-year in volume terms during March, despite the global impact of coronavirus.

According to the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), chicken meat exports totalled 349,500 tons during the month, up from 340,500 in March 2019.

Value was down slightly though with shipment revenue reaching $552.5m, 1.7% less than in March 2019, when $562.2m was generated.

In the accumulated amount for the year to date (January to March 2020), 1.021 million tons were exported, 8.8% more than the 939,000 tons shipped in the same period last year. Quarterly revenue was $1.635bn, 6% higher than the balance for 2019, with $1.542bn.

ABPA president Francisco Turra said: “Even with the impacts generated by Covid-19, the sector continues to play its strategic role in helping the food security of the Brazilian population and of several nations around the world, several of which are facing the epidemic at this time.”

On the pork side, ​Brazilian pork​ exports totalled 72,100 tons in March, 31.45% more than in the same period in 2019, when 54,800 tons were shipped.

The foreign exchange balance of pork exports in March was $166m, 56.1% more than in the same month of the previous year ($106.3m).

In the year to date (January to March) the sector's shipments reached 208,000 tons, 32% more than that obtained in the first quarter of 2019, when 157,500 tons were exported. In revenue, there was an increase of 62.6%, with $485.1m in the first quarter of this year, up from $298.3m in the first three months of 2019.

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply recently highlighted how the country has increased its presence in eight overseas markets during March​, in particular Egypt which has approved 42 facilities to export poultry and beef.
