A temporary ban on the exports of live animals from the British port of Ramsgate was lifted last week.

According to Thanet District Council, the council in charge of the port, the ban was lifted following legal advice. Solicitors said the circumstances in which the ban had been placed could no longer be sustained by law.

In light of the news, UK animals rights charity the RSPCA issued a statement that said: “The RSPCA regrets Thanet District Council’s decision to lift its ban on live exports from the Port of Ramsgate. We also note Thanet Council’s withdrawal from the judicial review of their previous ban due to be heard in the High Court from 11th -13th December. In light of this decision, the RSPCA is considering what we will do to safeguard the welfare of animals shipped through the Port.”
