Crowd Cow, the US marketplace for craft meat, has revealed plans to extend further outside its heartland to offer meat from around the world, beginning with Westmore Pastoral in Tasmania.

The marketplace has already partnered with more than 100 US farmers and is building a selective network of independent farmers to provide exclusive, quality meat from a known source. The marketplace lets consumers buy craft beef, chicken, pork and fish directly from small, independent farmers, then delivers it directly to their door

It offers customers everything from grass-fed beef raised on local farms to more exotic options, such as Kagoshima A5 Wagyu from Japan.

Crowd Cow said that, for craft meat, the terroir, breed, and practices were unique to each region and created “outstanding textures, incredible flavours, and truly artisanal meat”.

“We believe the best craft meats can be found in different locations around the world,” said Crowd Cow co-founder Joe Heitzeberg. “

“When we announced our national launch, we wanted to prove that we are committed to helping everyone discover the world of craft meats. Later, we brought exquisite, world-class Wagyu from Japan for our customers to enjoy. Now, we’re ready to bring more international delicacies to US customers, starting with mouthwatering craft beef from Tasmania.”

Crowd Cow’s latest meat is from Westmore Pastoral, a ranch at the heart of the grazing region and along the western coast of Tasmania. It said that Westmore’s cattle produced tender 100% grass-fed and finished beef. All the animals are part of the Greenham family’s Certified Humane and ‘Never Ever’ program, which meant they were 100% grass-fed and finished, pasture-raised, never confined, with no added hormones or antibiotics.

“We are literally going to the other side of the planet to find the best craft meats from outstanding independent producers,” said co-founder Ethan Lowry.

“Westmore Pastoral’s monopoly on the best grass grown in the region means their beef is full of rich beefy flavours with a crisp, clean finish. We want to share those mouthwatering flavours with our customers.”

Crowd Cow recently announced US$8 million in Series A funding, and its investors range from Madrona Venture Group to Joe Montana and Ashton Kutcher. Crowd Cow was named Startup of the Year in 2018 by technology news website GeekWire.
